Dr. Q’s Quest Working to Fight Brain Tumors
Dr. Alfredo Quinones-Hinojosa and his team in the Brain Tumor Stem Cell Research Laboratory at Mayo Clinic Florida are dedicated to finding a cure for brain cancer
MY STORY
A Doctor without borders
From the humblest beginnings in Mexicali, Mexico, Dr. Quiñones-Hinojosa literally jumped the border fence into the United States for a better future. With a drive and passion unparalleled, he worked to become an internationally renowned neuroscientist and neurosurgeon at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. Whether he’s comforting a patient, in the operating room, or working on his cutting-edge research, Dr. Q is always approachable, inventive, and driven.

WHAT WE DO

NEUROSURGERY
We strive to provide the best medical care possible for our patients, driven by Mayo Clinic’s motto: “The needs of the patient come first.” Our team is proud to represent the three shields representing the Mayo Clinic; which is to excel in education, research, and patient care.
We are part of an integrated, multidisciplinary team of doctors and health care professionals who provide individualized care for each patient. We are constantly seeking new knowledge to improve diagnosis, therapies and outcomes for patients with various brain and nervous system disorders.

EXCITING RESEARCH
Our Research Lab is continuously investigating the mechanism of neural stem cells found in brain tumors and developing new treatments from these discoveries. There are many ongoing projects involving pituitary tumors, gliomas, and meningiomas. Each project has a team dedicated solely to that subject. Ultimately our lab would like to better understand the brain tumors Dr. Q’s patients have in order to find a way to lessen their severity.
Dr. Q likes to keep himself, as well as his team, well versed in the world of science. If you are fluent in the language of science or just want to know what Q’s team is up to, please enjoy reading about all of them here.

MENTORING
Dr. Quinones is dedicated to mentoring students from all over the world in his laboratory and clinic. Our goal is to push our students to be successful leaders and impact the world through science, education and patient care. Many of our alumni have assumed faculty positions or have continued their professional careers at prestigious institutions across the globe. We work as team to train the future generation.

RUN FOR A CURE
For many years, Dr. Q and his team has been committed to raise awareness for cancer through running events.
It all started when Dr. Q met his patient, John Petrovick, a young and brilliant Baltimore law student who battled brain cancer for more than four years. Petrovick had learned he had a tumor while training for the Baltimore Marathon in 2008, but he never quit. This 28-year-old man became an inspiration to many when he vowed to continue running and raise money for cancer research .
In Florida, Dr. Q continues John’s legacy. With the generous help of Dr. Q’s patients, the team has been successful at organizing and competing in many marathons. Many of Dr. Q’s patients have run in these events.
Dr. Q and his team are also active in raising awareness for cancer in the national and local communities.
