The Creative Brain: Imagination and Knowledge (Video)

More than 20 years ago, Alfredo Quinones-Hinojosa, MD, crossed the US-Mexico border with no money and very little English to find work as a migrant farmworker in the fields of California. (November 13, 2008)

Alfredo Quiñones-Hinojosa: How I Became a Scientist

About this talk: At age 19, Quiñones-Hinojosa jumped the fence from Mexico to become a farm worker in California. Thanks to his own determination, hard work and discipline and a lot of support from family and friends, he left farm work, completed university and medical school, and ultimately became a highly successful physician-scientist and brain surgeon.

About the speaker: Alfredo Quiñones-Hinojosa is an Associate Professor of Neurosurgery and Oncology, Neuroscience and Cellular and Molecular Medicine and Director of the Brain Tumor Surgery Program at Johns Hopkins University. As well as being an expert surgeon, he researches the role of stem cells both in causing brain tumors and potentially in fighting them.

This talk was first released in iBioMagazine Issue 5.

The Creative Brain: Imagination and Knowledge (Audio)

More than 20 years ago, Alfredo Quinones-Hinojosa, MD, crossed the US-Mexico border with no money and very little English to find work as a migrant farmworker in the fields of California. (November 13, 2008)

Quiñones-Hinojosa: 1 Brain Tumors

In part 1, Quiñones-Hinojosa discusses the history of brain tumors, different types of tumors (non-cancerous vs cancerous) and what this means for treatment and prognosis. He then focuses on a specific type of tumor, glioblastoma multiforme, and outlines what oncologists and surgeons have learned about this cancer over the past 30 years and how this information has influenced treatment. He closes with a brief overview of what is known about brain tumor stem cells.

Quiñones-Hinojosa: 2 Stem Cells and Brain Tumors

In the second part of his talk, Dr. Q presents results from his lab and others that are beginning to provide insight into understanding brain tumor stem cells and the key role they play in both causing and possibly curing brain cancer.

Dr. Alfredo Quiñones-Hinojosa: From Migrant Farm Worker to Brain Surgeon

I interview Dr. Alfredo Quiñones-Hinojosa, who is a neurosurgeon, author, and a researcher who specializes in brain tumors. Currently he is the Mayo professor of Neurosurgery at the Mayo clinic in Jacksonville, Florida.
